Best way to quit smoking – How to quit smoking with hypnotherapy

What happens when you stop smoking?

No longer socially acceptable
In the 1960’s/70’s, cigarettes could be smoked just about anywhere. public parks, restaurants and even hospitals. Yes, I was shocked by that one…one of my clients recalled how she was allowed to smoke in her bed, in the maternity ward, after her baby was born! Cigarette ads were everywhere and most people thought it was a hip thing to do. However (thankfully!!), people are now more aware of how dangerous smoking is to their health.
Why stop smoking?
These days, smoking is highly restricted or sometimes even banned in public places. Cigarette companies are banned from advertising their products on the TV, radio, and on print, and most people now know that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, emphysema, etc. It can also reduce your lifespan by 10 years or more. The cost implication for this habit over a period of years runs into thousands of pounds. So how is it that people still smoke? The answer is simple, its called ADDICTION.
Addiction – once you’re hooked, it’s hard to unhook yourself
Breaking the habit of smoking is really difficult and this is because tobacco contains a substance called nicotine, which is a very addictive. And just like heroin or other addictive substances, it doesn’t take too long for the mind and the body to quickly get so used to it, that you need to smoke to feel normal. People then come up with loads of reasons why they need to smoke. Sometimes, they think it’s cool, others find themselves smoking because they have close friends and family members that smoke. Studies have shown that for every 10 smokers, about 9 of them start before they turn 18. And I’m very sure they never thought that they would become addicted. Little wonder why they say – it’s better not to even start in the first place. You should also be careful with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) because they are loaded with cancer-causing chemicals and harmful toxins, including the ones used in antifreeze. These devices which are battery-operated use cartridges that are stuffed with nicotine, flavourings, and other harmful chemicals which it converts into a vapour that the smoker inhales. No matter what, let’s always make one thing clear: there isn’t anything as a “safe” nicotine product.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes aren’t the only thing that get people hooked on tobacco. Hookahs, which are staples of the Middle Eastern café society, are water pipes that have a hose and a tapered mouthpiece through which you can smoke tobacco. A popular myth even exists which suggests that hookahs are safer since the smoke that comes from it gets cooled by the time it is passed through the water. However, you should take note of the black, resinous gunk that accumulates in the hose of the hookah. In fact, experts say hookahs are actually not safer than cigarettes — and since people often use them for longer periods and they don’t have filters, the health risks might be even greater. Risks of smoking
There actually aren’t any physical reasons for anyone to take up smoking. The body has absolutely no need for tobacco – unlike the way it needs food, sleep, water, sleep and exercise. Chemicals like nicotine and cyanide, which you find in cigarettes, are actually dangerous poisons that can kill an individual when taken in high doses. Our body system is smart. It quickly finds ways to defend itself whenever it is being threatened by poison. People who are smoking for the first time usually feel a burning pain in their throat and lungs, and sometimes some first timers even feel ill, sick or vomit when they inhale cigarette smoke.
Some of the health consequences that cigarette poisoning causes, happen over a long time. In the long run, smoking causes health challenges like stroke, heart disease, emphysema (which is a breakdown in the tissues of the lungs), and several forms of cancer — like lung, stomach, throat and bladder cancer. Smokers are often prone to developing skin problems like psoriasis (which is a type of rash), and are also very likely to have wrinkles because of the lack of oxygen getting to their skin and vital organs. Smokers also stand a higher chance of getting infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. As Carrie Bradshaw says “It’s killing me.”
These diseases weaken your normal active life, and sometimes can lead to death. Statistics show that in the U.S. about 1 out of every 5 deaths is caused by smoking. In the UK Ash – Action on smoking and health website reports that every year, around 96,000 people in the UK die from diseases caused by smoking.
Smokers lose some of their bone density and this leaves them vulnerable to diseases like osteoporosis (a condition that makes people’s backs to bend over as they get older and causes their bones to break more easily). Smoking also causes fertility issues and can negatively affect one’s sexual health. Girls who smoke and also take Pills or any other hormone-based birth control method have a higher chance of contracting severe health challenges; like heart attacks. Other short term side effects of smoking include:
Bad breath – Cigarette smoking causes persistent bad breath, a condition known as halitosis.
Clothes and hair with bad smell – The odor of stale smoke seems to stick around on people’s clothes, their hairs, cars and furnitures. Getting this smell off is often very difficult.
Poor athletic display – Smokers are usually no rivals in terms of athletics to those of their non-smoking counterparts because the physical impacts of smoking (like a faster heartbeat, poor blood circulation, and short breaths) negatively affect sports performance.
Higher injury risks and slower recovery time – Our body’s collagen producing abilities are affected by smoking so regular sports injuries, like tendon or ligament injuries, will take a longer time to heal for smokers than for non smokers.
Increased chances of falling sick – Studies have shown that smokers are a lot more prone to flu, colds, pneumonia and bronchitis than non-smokers. And those with pre existing health conditions, like asthma, are likely to become sicker when they smoke (or even if they just hang around people who do). Some teens who in a bid to manage their weight tend to want to use smoking to control their appetite, which eventually leaves them without the necessary nutrients their body needs to grow, develop, and resist illnesses.
Best way to quit smoking – staying nicotine free
All things tobacco — from cigarettes, to cigars, pipes, hookahs, and smokeless tobacco — are dangerous to your health. It’s not helpful to try to replace cigarettes with products that seems like they are better like low-tar or filtered cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
The only true solution to helping you avert the dangers of smoking is for one to stay nicotine free. This might not be as easy as it sounds, especially if you have people around you that smoke and are willing to offer you cigarettes. But, being nicotine free gives you a whole lot more from life — more energy, better looks, better vitality and more money for you to spare, and eventually, a longer healthier life!

As a hypnotherapist in London, I often get asked what hypnotherapy entails. I really enjoyed watching this YouTube video as it explains the process very well. This lady explains how she was concerned about having hypnotherapy for anxiety, as she had seen stage hypnosis on the TV that frightened her. She was scared that it would control her.
After some friends that she trusted suggested she try it, as hypnosis is good for anxiety, she gave it a go. She explains how she was conscious all the time, awake and alert in her mind, could talk and answer questions, or choose not to. She was in complete control and wouldn’t do anything against her will. Her body felt incredibly relaxed and she could feel her body go into a deeper relaxed state when asked to. However, she said that if she needed to, for example if a fire alarm went off, she would be able to open her eyes at any point and walk out of the room.
The hypnotherapy helped her to achieve her goal by working with the subconscious mind whilst being really relaxed – not by being under control or unconscious. The Hypnotherapist helped the client to help herself by changing her beliefs and working towards her goal of overcoming her anxiety. It has helped her subconscious to not feel anxious, so it doesn’t affect her everyday life. After the session she felt different, completely awake and in touch with how to deal with her anxieties.
